Events

Events and festivals are in season all year round in Northern Germany. Along with maritime festivals such as the Hamburg Harbour Birthday, the largest sailing events in the world, the Kiel and Travemünde Weeks, as well as the hansesail Rostock, you will also find small-scale, passionately organised festivals such as the Lübeck HanseKulturFestival or the Bremen Schnoorfest in the historic city centres. Concert and art series such as the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and NORDart further enrich the event calendar.

The annual highlight are the Christmas markets that take place throughout Northern Germany. The towns are festively decorated with fairy lights, fir trees and Christmas stars and invite you to enjoy the must-try mulled winde accompanied by local delicacies and roasted almonds against the perfect Christmas backdrop of historic buildings. Many stalls offer Christmas handicrafts: classic Christmas tree decorations and toys, but also regional products and unusual gift ideas. A wonderful farewell to the year.

Sustainability

We take on responsibility: Sustainability plays a crucial role in Northern Germany. The region, especially along the North and Baltic Seas, is a leader in the use of wind power, both offshore and onshore. Schleswig-Holstein, for example, is home to some of the largest onshore wind farms in Europe, while the North Sea features major offshore wind projects. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the region’s agricultural sector is increasingly focused on ecological farming methods, with initiatives to reduce chemical use and protect the environment. Nature reserves such as the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Niedersachsen, contribute to the preservation of biodiversity. The Hanseatic City of Lübeck has been the first Fair Trade City in Schleswig-Holstein and the green Hanseatic Cities of Hamburg and Bremen both act strictly according to their climate strategies.
