25 Years of Touristic Marketing
Deutsches Küstenland e.V. is the tourism marketing alliance of the five northern German federal states Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein and the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. We’ve teamed up as association Deutsches Küstenland e.V. (DKL) to carry the North German spirit into the world. For over 25 years we have exclusively been promoting Northern Germany in selected source markets which promise to have a large potential for the entire region. The market, cojointly defined with our exclusive partner German National Tourist Board (GNTB) after a careful analysis, is presently Poland. The major objectives in this market are:
- to strengthen the awareness and interest of travellers, trade partners and media representatives
- to strengthen the positive image for the Northern German region
- to contribute to an increase of overnight stays from the jointly defined source market
Our objectives are in line with the overarching goals the GNTB aims for in its work for Germany as a travel destination as a whole. They are achieved through the realisation of comprehensive marketing measures. DKL concentrates on close cooperation with key accounts from trade and the press and also focuses on social media communication as well as online campaigns.
Our head office is located in Lübeck. It manages all affairs regarding the association and marketing. Click here for more info and to get in touch.

Naturally Sustainable
We take on responsibility: Sustainability plays a crucial role in Northern Germany. The region, especially along the North and Baltic Seas, is a leader in the use of wind power, both offshore and onshore. Schleswig-Holstein, for example, is home to some of the largest onshore wind farms in Europe, while the North Sea features major offshore wind projects. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the region’s agricultural sector is increasingly focused on ecological farming methods, with initiatives to reduce chemical use and protect the environment. Nature reserves such as the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Niedersachsen, contribute to the preservation of biodiversity. The Hanseatic City of Lübeck has been the first Fair Trade City in Schleswig-Holstein and the green Hanseatic Cities of Hamburg and Bremen both act strictly according to their climate strategies.
Northern Germany leads the way and offers the best basic requirements for the tourism sector, too. Ecotourism is widespread and well established to ensure not only truly magical holidays, but also various possiblities to spend your time off close to nature and in balance with oneself and the region and all people who live there. For example at the Baltic coast, areas like Rügen Island in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and nature park Holstein Switzerland in Schleswig-Holstein offer sustainable travel options, plenty of nature activities and organic food guides. Atmospheric cities like Hamburg and Bremen offer various possibilities for sustainable arrival and transport on site and Lübeck, being famous for its medieval architecture, even has two sustainably certified travel destinations, the Hanseatic City itself and the seaside resort Travemünde. Niedersachsen promotes „green vibes only“ to reduce carbon foodprint within their five climate zones, such as the Harz mountains. The city of Celle, recognized as a role model in climate protection, is known for their bee institute, sustainable saunas and green electricity for the Celler Badeland Water Park.
Needless to say that this results in plenty of activities in breathtaking nature and authentic experiences with our locals – get in touch with nature and diversity!
